{"id":10853,"date":"2024-09-19T19:34:19","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T19:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=10853"},"modified":"2024-09-19T19:34:23","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T19:34:23","slug":"unetaneh-tokef-who-by-water-who-by-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/unetaneh-tokef-who-by-water-who-by-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Unetaneh Tokef: Who by Water, Who by Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Frightening Judgement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Look around you on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur\u00a0as the powerful, frightening <em>piyut <\/em>(liturgical poem) of\u00a0<em>Unetaneh Tokef<\/em>\u00a0 is sung during the <em>Mussaf<\/em> prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This awe-inspiring section depicts how we all pass before God on the annual day of judgement like sheep passing in front of their shepherd, one by one. It symbolizes, more than any other&nbsp; part of the service, what judgement really means. Its power lies in not only describing how we&nbsp; each appear individually before God, but it also lists the possible scenarios for our own private&nbsp; year to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How many shall pass away&nbsp;(before entering this world i.e. miscarriage\/stillbirth) and how many shall be born.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who shall live and who shall die.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who will die at their appointed time&nbsp;and whose life will be cut short.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who by water and who by fire.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who by the sword and who by wild beast.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who by famine and who by thirst.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who by earthquake and&nbsp;who by plague (pandemic).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Who by strangulation and who by stoning.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a time when many of us think back over how our last year and those of our friends and\u00a0 relatives played out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Will Tomorrow Bring?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How many of&nbsp;the above scenarios seemed unbelievable a generation ago but are sadly now part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;regular news broadcasts? Whether you call it climate change, force of nature or an act of God, so many people are affected by&nbsp;wildfires, floods and droughts and many areas&nbsp;of the world suffer barbaric terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you remember how you felt on Rosh Hashanah six months after the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>? Who didn\u2019t know someone who had succumbed to this terrible pandemic? So many lived in fear of what tomorrow might bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just two weeks after saying this&nbsp;prayer last year, the whole of Israel and the Jewish people were plunged into the horror of the massacre by Hamas and a war which at the time of this writing is still ongoing and has claimed the lives of so many hostages and soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for those who live, will this coming year&nbsp;be one of peace and tranquility or worry and torment? Will their finances prosper or will they lose their money? Will they be successful or&nbsp;fail in their enterprises?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, the prayer of Unetaneh Tokef has become more and more relevant to each and every one of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three Days and a Chilling Prayer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>seforim <\/em>(holy books) state that this poem was composed by Rabbi Amnon of Mainz in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century.&nbsp;The Bishop of Mainz&nbsp;wanted him to convert to&nbsp;Christianity. In an effort to gain time to decide how he could avoid the punishment he would receive for not converting, Rabbi Amnon is said to have asked for three days to consider the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His request was granted but he realized what a betrayal of God it was to even give the impression that he was considering the idea. He begged the bishop to cut his tongue out for his blasphemy but the bishop ordered that his arms and legs be chopped\u00a0off instead.\u00a0As he was bleeding\u00a0to\u00a0death he asked to be taken\u00a0to the local shul where he recited this poem in front\u00a0of the Aron Kodesh\u00a0and then died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Unetaneh Tokef <em>tefillah\u00a0<\/em>(prayer) brings chills to even the most laid-back congregants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we\u2019re not left shivering and helpless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repentance, Prayer, and, Charity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>piyut <\/em>continues to tell\u00a0us how we can lessen or even change the judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>REPENTANCE, PRAYER and&nbsp; GIVING CHARITY can avert the evil decree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Rabbi Jonathan Sacks \u05d6\u05e6&#8221;\u05dc, past Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, says in his commentary on the machzor (the Holyday prayer book):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Repentance is our relationship with ourselves, prayer is our relationship with God, and charity is our relationship to others.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Sacks points&nbsp;out that Jews don\u2019t believe in fatalism or predestination. We can change and once we have changed we cease to be the person we were, the person who was destined to suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>piyut <\/em>continues with how God is slow to anger. He doesn\u2019t want to condemn us to death.
