But isn\u2019t that heretical? Since Hashem is perfect and self-sufficient, how can we say He \u201cneeds\u201d anything?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Does Hashem really need every Yid? | Ask the Rabbi Live with Rabbi Chaim Mintz\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZUptP2ZoSBE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Rabbi Chaim Mintz responds:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creation&#8217;s Purpose: Earning Divine Goodness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Hashem (God) is perfect and self-sufficient in every way, and He lacks and needs nothing. But being the epitome of goodness, it is His will to shower us with blessings, and for that, He \u201cneeds\u201d us to do our part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire purpose of creation is so that we can bask in His presence in the World to Come, which can only be enjoyed fully if we earn it, through studying Torah and performing mitzvot. In this way, Hashem \u201cneeds\u201d us to do our part so He can fulfill His will to shower us with goodness. In the words of Rabbi Chaim Volozhiner (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Nefesh_HaChayyim_1:9&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Nefesh Hachaim<\/em> 1:9<\/a>, and a number of times in the second <em>Shaar<\/em> [Gate]), \u201c<em>Avodah tzorech gavoah<\/em> \u2013 Service [of Hashem] is for the need of the One above.\u201d This underscores the beautiful idea that \u201cHashem Needs Every Yid\u201d to complete His divine plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Guesthouse Analogy: Understanding Hashem&#8217;s &#8220;Need&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine someone who dreams of creating a guesthouse. To bring this vision to life, he needs an architect, a contractor, a decorator, suppliers, and workers. Does he personally need them? No. He could abandon the project and still lack nothing. But his desire to extend kindness makes these roles essential \u2014 not for his own benefit, but to fulfill his vision of giving to others. Similarly, Hashem needs every Yid to fulfill His ultimate desire: to shower us with goodness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Serving Hashem with Reward in Mind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not just something abstract, but something for us to think about when performing mitzvot. The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Mishna_Avot_1:3&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1:3<\/a>) teaches that we should serve Hashem not for the sake of receiving reward, but rather simply to fulfill His will. The Ruach Chaim points out that there is actually an even higher level of serving Hashem: serving Him for the sake of reward \u2014 not for selfish reasons, but for Hashem\u2019s sake. When we perform mitzvot, we are facilitating Hashem\u2019s will to reward us \u2013 the very purpose of creation \u2013 giving Him immense satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Vilna Gaon&#8217;s Etrog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a famous story told about the Vilna Gaon. One year, no <em>etrog<\/em> could be found in the city for Sukkot. His students searched the surrounding towns and villages until they found a man with an <em>etrog<\/em>. The man was willing to sell his <em>etrog<\/em> to them, but with one condition: the Gaon had to give the man all his reward for the mitzvah. The students were forced to accept the terms but were terrified to tell their master. When they did, to their surprise, instead of being upset he rejoiced. \u201cFinally, I have the opportunity to fulfill the dictum of the Mishnah: \u2018Do mitzvot not for the sake of receiving reward!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rabbi Moshe Feinstein: Valuing Individual Reward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, however, refused to believe this story, declaring, \u201cIf the will of Hashem is to give reward, then we should want to receive the reward as well!\u201d In Rav Moshe\u2019s view, Hashem\u2019s will is not just to give in general. Every Jew matters to Him, and His will is to reward each and every one of us individually. Therefore, He doesn&#8217;t want one Jew to lose out on his reward and be given to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hashem Needs Every Yid to Partake of His Goodness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of a doting grandmother who invites her grandchildren on a Friday afternoon and serves them each a piece of kugel. If one grandchild gives away his piece to another, it would not please her. She wants each one to take pleasure in her delicious kugel and not miss out. So too, Hashem \u201cneeds\u201d each and every Yid to do their part, so that each one can receive the reward He has in mind for him or her and partake in the goodness He wants to bestow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><em>In short: <\/em><\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Hashem is perfect and lacks nothing, but He needs us to do our part in order for Him to fulfill His will to share His goodness with us, which we can only receive fully if we earn it.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button tm-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/sign-up.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about Jewish philosophy with a TorahMate.
