Why would the evil Haman, who tried to wipe out the Jewish people, merit such illustrious descendants?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why did Haman merit righteous Jewish grandchildren? | Ask the Rabbi Live with Rabbi Chaim Mintz\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1jND1BIiZkg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Rabbi Chaim Mintz responds:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inadvertent National Repentance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Haman\u2019s wickedness, his actions inadvertently led to an unparalleled <em>teshuvah<\/em> (repentance) movement among the Jewish people, and for that, he was ultimately rewarded with righteous descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Bavli_Megillah_14a&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Megillah 14a<\/a>) tells us that the removal of Achashveirosh\u2019s signet ring accomplished more than the 48 prophets and 7 prophetesses. Throughout the generations, the prophets had rebuked the Jewish people, urging them to repent and return to the proper path. While their efforts had some impact, none succeeded in bringing about a complete national <em>teshuvah<\/em>. Yet when Achashveirosh removed his ring and gave it to Haman, giving him the authority to eradicate the Jewish people, it accomplished what all the prophets could not. His decree shook the nation to the core, leading them to mass repentance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">God Rewards even Unintentional Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While true reward is reserved for actions performed with good intentions\u2014when a person earns his reward by exercising his free will to choose what is right\u2014no good outcome goes unrewarded. Hashem, in His infinite and unfathomable kindness, grants some level of reward for the good that results from a person\u2019s actions, even if it was unintentional and therefore unearned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, although Haman\u2019s motives were entirely evil, Hashem still rewarded him for the good that emerged from his actions, no matter how unintended it may have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This concept of receiving reward for unintended good is found in various places. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rashi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rashi<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Rashi_Devarim_24:19&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ki Teitzei 24:19<\/a>), quoting Chazal (our Sages, of blessed memory), writes that if a person accidentally drops money and a pauper finds and uses it, Hashem rewards the person who lost it. Even though the act was unintentional, the pauper ultimately received charity because of him, and Hashem rewards him for the unintended kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dogs&#8217; Reward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This principle extends even to animals. The Torah (Mishpatim <a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Rashi_Shemot_22:30&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">22:30<\/a>) instructs us to feed our non-kosher meat to the dogs. Why specifically to dogs and not any other animal? Rashi explains that this is a reward for the dogs. During <em>Makkat Bechorot <\/em>(the plague of the firstborn), while the dogs barked and howled at the Egyptians, the Torah attests that they remained completely silent toward the Jewish people. This silence granted the Jews tranquility and clearly demonstrated that Hashem was with them. As a reward for their behavior, we are instructed to give our non-kosher meat specifically to dogs. Although dogs do not have free will, and their actions were clearly being controlled by Hashem, the very fact that their behavior revealed that He was with the Jewish people earned them reward, because, \u201cHashem does not withhold the reward of any creature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>In Short:<\/strong> Haman merited righteous descendants because his decree triggered an unprecedented national <\/em>teshuvah <em>movement, and although it was unintentional,<\/em> <em>Hashem rewarded the positive outcome.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button tm-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/sign-up.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about the Jewish response to tragedy with a TorahMate.
