For example, if Yom Tov is Tuesday and Wednesday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can prepare food Monday night and Tuesday for consumption on Monday night or Tuesday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can prepare Tuesday night and Wednesday for Tuesday night or Wednesday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>you may not prepare food on Tuesday for Wednesday<\/strong>, because Tuesday night is already the second day of Yom Tov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing from Yom Tov to Shabbos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when Yom Tov falls on Friday, we are going directly from Yom Tov into Shabbos. To <strong>prepare food on Yom Tov for Shabbos<\/strong>, one must make an <strong>Eruv Tavshilin<\/strong> in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Should Make It?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Every <strong>household<\/strong> should make its own Eruv Tavshilin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the <strong>rabbi<\/strong> makes an Eruv Tavshilin on behalf of the community, that communal Eruv only applies to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those unaware of the halachah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those whose Eruv was lost or eaten<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or individuals who faced an emergency and couldn\u2019t prepare their own<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, each household should fulfill the mitzvah themselves. That\u2019s why we say a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/are-my-thoughts-while-performing-a-mitzvah-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brachah<\/a><\/strong>\u2014because making an Eruv Tavshilin is a mitzvah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an Eruv Tavshilin?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An <strong>Eruv Tavshilin<\/strong> includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>cooked item<\/strong> (this is the primary component). Most people use a <strong>hard-boiled egg<\/strong>, though it could be fish, chicken, or any cooked dish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>baked item<\/strong> (e.g., challah during the year or matzah on Pesach)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We begin preparing food for Shabbos on <strong>Erev Yom Tov<\/strong>, and then we can finish those preparations <strong>on Yom Tov (Friday)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eruv is <strong>symbolic<\/strong>\u2014it shows that we began the preparations before Yom Tov, and are simply continuing them on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Practical Details<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prepare the Eruv on Erev Yom Tov<\/strong>, and store it somewhere <strong>safe and visible<\/strong> so it isn\u2019t eaten or spoiled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Eruv must be <strong>intact<\/strong> when you begin preparing food on Friday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The food you&#8217;re making for Shabbos must be <strong>edible before Shabbos begins<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, if you\u2019re making <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/basic-cholent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cholent<\/a><\/strong>, put it up <strong>early Friday<\/strong>\u2014ideally in the morning or right after your Yom Tov meal, <strong>not late afternoon<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Make the Eruv Tavshilin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Take the cooked and baked foods<\/strong> (e.g., a hard-boiled egg and a matzah).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hold them in your hands<\/strong> and say the <strong>brachah<\/strong>: <em>Baruch Atah Ado-noi Elo-heinu Melech HaOlam asher kid&#8217;shanu b&#8217;mitzvosav v&#8217;tzivanu al mitzvas Eruv.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then say the <strong>declaration<\/strong>, which is usually found in the <strong>Machzor<\/strong> before the holiday prayers. It can be said in <strong>Aramaic or English<\/strong>: <em>Bahadein Eruva, yehay sharai lana, la\u2019afuyei, ul\u2019vashulei, ul\u2019atmunei, ul\u2019adlukei shraga, ul\u2019sakana, ul\u2019me&#8217;bad kol tzarkana, miyoma tava l\u2019Shabisa.<\/em> <em>(With this Eruv, it shall be permitted for us to bake, cook, insulate, kindle a flame, and prepare, and do anything necessary on Yom Tov for the sake of Shabbos.)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some texts add: <em>Lana ul&#8217;chol Yisrael hadarim ba\u2019ir hazo<\/em>s.<br><em>(For us and all the Jews dwelling in this city)<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Only say this if you\u2019re the rabbi<\/strong> making the Eruv on behalf of the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Afterward<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Store the egg or other cooked item in a <strong>labeled bag<\/strong> (e.g., write &#8220;Eruv Tavshilin&#8221; on it), and <strong>keep it refrigerated<\/strong>.
