But I\u2019ve also heard that the Talmud speaks strongly against this. How do we understand those who make these kinds of predictions?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Rabbi Chaim Mintz responds:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Talmudic Warning Against Calculations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the Sages expressed strong opposition to attempts to calculate the time of the redemption (<em>keitz<\/em>). As the Talmud (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Bavli_Sanhedrin_97b&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sanhedrin<\/em> 97b<\/a>) declares: <em>\u201cMay the very essence of those who calculate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/end-of-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the End [of days]<\/a> suffer in agony.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yaakov Avinu\u2019s Hidden Revelation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chazal (Our Sages) (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Bavli_Pesachim_56a&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Pesachim<\/em> 56a<\/a>) teach that when Yaakov Avinu (our Patriarch Jacob) gathered his sons around him as he lay on his deathbed, he intended to reveal the time of the ultimate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/bringing-the-final-redemption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">redemption<\/a>. But before he could do so, the Shechinah (Divine Presence) suddenly departed from him. Yaakov understood this as a sign that Hashem wanted the date of the redemption to remain hidden.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daniel\u2019s Secrets Remain Sealed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the Talmud (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Bavli_Megillah_3a&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Megillah<\/em> 3a<\/a>) relates that after Yonatan ben Uziel translated the Nevi\u2019im (Books of Prophets), he sought to continue with the translation of the Ketuvim (The Writings). But a Heavenly voice warned him not to, because of the Book of Daniel, which contains allusions to the date of Mashiach\u2019s arrival\u2014a secret that should remain hidden.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Some Rabbis Still Calculate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these seemingly definitive sources, some prominent rabbis over the years have attempted to calculate the arrival of Mashiach. They argued that a key distinction exists between the era of Chazal and our own. Chazal lived in a time far from the <em>keitz<\/em>, when revealing a distant date could have led to despair. Something thousands of years away is hard to grasp and can feel irrelevant. But as history progresses and we move closer, calculations would yield a much nearer date\u2014something people can relate to, and even draw encouragement from.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Malbim\u2019s Journey Analogy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malbim explained this idea with the following analogy: A father and son embark on a long journey. After a little while, the child asks, \u201cWhen will we arrive?\u201d Since they are still far from their destination and the answer would only dishearten the child, the father avoids giving a definitive answer and simply says, \u201cWe\u2019ll get there eventually.\u201d But as they draw closer, with only a few days remaining, the father gives a more specific answer, saying, \u201cIn just a few days,\u201d knowing that this will encourage his son.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although many of these predictions came and went and Mashiach is still not here, that does not mean they were entirely mistaken. It is quite possible that events took place that were steps in the process of redemption.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who May Calculate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, only a truly great sage would be qualified to attempt such a calculation. Moreover, most rabbis throughout the generations refrained from doing so, maintaining that this knowledge is to remain hidden even today.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be\u2019itah Achishenah\u2014Hastening vs. Deadline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also important to note that even the predetermined time for the arrival of Mashiach is merely a deadline, and he can still come sooner. In <em>Yeshayah<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Yeshayahu_60:22&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60:22<\/a>), Hashem declares about the redemption: \u201c<em>be\u2019itah achishenah\u2014in its time, I will hasten it<\/em>.\u201d This appears contradictory: will the redemption come at its predetermined time (<em>be\u2019itah<\/em>), or before (<em>achishenah<\/em>)?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Bavli_Sanhedrin_98a&amp;s1=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sanhedrin<\/em> 98a<\/a>) resolves this by explaining that both are true. If the Jewish people are not worthy, Mashiach will come at the final, allotted time. But if we are deserving, the redemption will come earlier, hastened by our merits.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Practical Role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So rather than trying to calculate the latest possible time Mashiach could come, we should turn our attention to what we can do to help bring him sooner. By learning Torah, observing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/are-my-thoughts-while-performing-a-mitzvah-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mitzvot<\/a><\/em> (Torah commandments) properly, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/kedushah-prayer-toeing-the-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">davening<\/a> (praying) sincerely for his arrival, we can play a part in hastening the redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Talmud warns against calculating Mashiach\u2019s arrival and many rabbis maintain that this remains in effect today, as we near the keitz, some rabbis permit it.
