{"id":12979,"date":"2025-08-08T13:33:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T13:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=12979"},"modified":"2025-08-08T13:33:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T13:33:12","slug":"parshat-vaetchanan-moshes-song-opening-heavens-gates-with-praise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/parshat-vaetchanan-moshes-song-opening-heavens-gates-with-praise\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Va&#8217;etchanan: Moshe\u2019s Song &#8211; Opening Heaven\u2019s Gates with Praise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moshe&#8217;s Pleas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <em>parshah, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/parshas-vaeschanan-what-a-privelege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parshat Va&#8217;etchanan<\/a><em> <\/em>begins with one of the most moving and personal episodes in the Torah. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/feeling-the-pain-of-the-jewish-people-nosei-b-ol-im-chaveiro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses)<\/a>, the greatest of all prophets, turns to Hashem (God) in heartfelt prayer, pleading for the opportunity to enter Israel. The word the Torah uses\u2014<em>va\u2019etchanan<\/em>, \u201cI implored\u201d\u2014is rich with meaning. The Ba\u2019al HaTurim notes that <em>va\u2019etchanan<\/em> has the same numerical value (<em>gematria<\/em>) as the word <em>shirah<\/em>\u2014song (515). What is the connection between a desperate plea and a song?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Rashi_Berakhot_4b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brachot 4b<\/a>) teaches that before asking for our needs, a person should first draw close to Hashem through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/chanukah-delight-in-praising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praise<\/a>. Only afterward should he present his requests. This is the ideal structure of prayer. Chazal (our Sages) followed this principle when establishing the structure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/the-destruction-of-the-temple-practical-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amidah<\/a> prayer (Shemoneh Esrei). The first three <em>brachot<\/em> (blessings) are dedicated entirely to glorifying and praising Hashem. Only after this do we move on to the section of personal requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opening the Gates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Tiferet Shlomo<\/em> explains that it is through <em>shirah<\/em>\u2014songs of praise\u2014that we open the gates of Heaven. Once those gates are opened, we are in a position to ask for whatever we need (<em>Tiferet Shlomo<\/em>, Parashat Ki Tisa). Similarly, the <em>Seder HaYom<\/em> explains why Chazal embedded so many requests in the final <em>brachah<\/em> of <em>Sim Shalom<\/em> (Grant Peace). Even though the last three <em>brachot<\/em> of the <em>Amidah<\/em> are generally not designated for requests, the <em>Sim Shalom<\/em> follows immediately after <em>Modim<\/em>, our declaration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/praising-hashem-in-every-situation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gratitude<\/a>. Gratitude opens gates\u2014and once those gates are open, we can pour out our hearts to Hashem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this we learn a powerful truth: before turning to Hashem for a specific request, we should first stop to praise Him, to thank Him for all the good we already have. It\u2019s not just good manners\u2014it\u2019s a spiritual key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Miracle in the Storm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One remarkable story brings this idea to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Yitzchak David Grossman, grandfather of the esteemed Chief Rabbi of Migdal HaEmek, was once returning by ship from Poland to Israel. The journey was uneventful\u2014until tragedy nearly struck. In the middle of the sea, the small ship on which he was traveling collided with a much larger vessel. Chaos broke out. The larger ship\u2019s crew, unfriendly and hostile, made a quick and cruel decision: they would only rescue the non-Jewish passengers. The Jewish travelers, they declared, would remain aboard the small ship\u2014destined, it seemed, to sink beneath the waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panic swept through the passengers. Cries filled the air. People clutched one another in fear. But amidst the chaos, one figure stood out\u2014calm, focused, uplifted. It was Rav Grossman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He quietly opened his <em>siddur<\/em>. It was Friday afternoon, moments before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/category\/shabbat-and-holidays\/shabbat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shabbat<\/a>. As the sea roared around them, Rabbi Grossman began to recite <em>Kabbalat Shabbat<\/em>\u2014the sacred prayers welcoming the holy day\u2014with a voice full of sweetness, serenity, and unwavering faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then, as if completely unshaken by the impending danger, he began to sing. He rose to his feet and danced. Yes\u2014danced! He sang the words of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/lecha-dodi-medley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Lecha Dodi<\/em> (Come, My Beloved)<\/a> with heartfelt emotion, his eyes uplifted, his soul bound to Heaven. His feet moved with joy and gratitude\u2014for the Shabbat, for Hashem\u2019s kindness, for life itself. Others looked on, stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His spirit was infectious. Some began to cry. Others joined in the song. Faith lit up that doomed ship like a flame in the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then\u2014miraculously\u2014the small ship did not sink. Against all odds, it stayed afloat. It sailed safely to the shores of Israel. However, the bigger ship wasn\u2019t as fortunate and it capsized.
