{"id":13281,"date":"2025-09-10T14:23:42","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T14:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=13281"},"modified":"2025-09-12T15:18:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T15:18:21","slug":"finding-my-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/finding-my-roots\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding My Roots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Couple&#8217;s TorahMate Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My husband and I both grew up in similar homes with the basic Jewish expectations: lighting Shabbat candles, doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/the-sanctity-of-shabbos-with-rabbi-rappaport-lesson-15-friday-night-kiddush-translation-and-commentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>kiddush <\/em>on Shabbat<\/a> \u2014 but that was it. We always knew we wanted something different for our kids eventually. It wasn\u2019t until we got involved with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oorah.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oorah<\/a> that we began to grow in our observance and in our understanding that Judaism is the foundation for helping our family grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were introduced to Oorah and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> TorahMates<\/a> program when we toured the middle school for our kids. They had both been in public school throughout elementary, and right before the pandemic, my husband and I decided it would be too risky to send them to public middle school where they\u2019d be exposed to things that didn\u2019t align with our family\u2019s values. We visited a local Jewish day school, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emek Hebrew Academy<\/a>, and that\u2019s where we first heard about the TorahMates program and that they could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oorah.org\/pre-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help subsidize our tuition<\/a> if we committed to learning Torah once a week over the phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me just say: my TorahMate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/staff.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah Feldman<\/a>, has been an absolute gift. Over the past three years, she\u2019s changed my perspective on observance and helped me strengthen my <em>emunah <\/em>(faith). We began by learning the weekly parshah and filling in gaps in my general Jewish knowledge. Now, our learning has evolved into meaningful conversations about life and the importance of continuing Jewish values in our home. With Sarah\u2019s support and guidance, I was able to set firm boundaries at work \u2014 including my decision not to attend work events on Shabbat \u2014 and to my surprise, I found that it was respected. I truly look forward to our weekly conversations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning with my TorahMate deepens my connection to faith and gives me a clearer understanding of my role in passing down what I\u2019ve learned to my children and family. So far, the biggest turning point since my husband and I started learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/do-men-and-women-have-the-same-torah-commandments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(he also has a phenomenal TorahMate, by the way!<\/a>) has been that we now keep Shabbat! I&#8217;m sure that we will continue to grow and take on more mitzvahs over time. I\u2019m deeply grateful to Oorah, the TorahMates program, and especially to Sarah \u2014 for her patience, her guidance, and for helping me become a better version of who I am with every conversation
