{"id":14465,"date":"2025-12-03T15:47:43","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T15:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=14465"},"modified":"2025-12-11T19:11:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T19:11:41","slug":"upsherin-part-1-a-jewish-boys-first-haircut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/upsherin-part-1-a-jewish-boys-first-haircut\/","title":{"rendered":"Upsherin Part 1: A Jewish Boy\u2019s First Haircut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Haircut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chalakah or <a href=\"https:\/\/aish.com\/48964501\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Upsherin<\/a><sup>1<\/sup> refers to the Jewish custom of cutting a boy\u2019s hair at his third birthday.<sup>2<\/sup> In many Jewish communities, they refrain from cutting a young boy\u2019s hair for the first three years of his life.<sup>3<\/sup> At his third birthday, the boy receives his first haircut, which is very commonly celebrated with a festive ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the haircut, the parents must ensure that the barber does not remove the child\u2019s <em>pe&#8217;ot<\/em> (side locks). Thus, the child has his first interaction with the mitzvah of <em>pe&#8217;ot<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many communities, after his haircut, the child dons a <em>kippah<\/em><sup>4<\/sup> (skullcap) for the first time. He also receives a <em>talit katan<\/em><sup>5<\/sup><em> <\/em>with <em>tzitzit <\/em>(fringes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big Moment!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chalakah is a momentous occasion in Jewish life, as a boy is first introduced to his personal performance of mitzvot (Jewish commandments). Jewish parents utilize this occasion to instill in their child a love for Torah and mitzvot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is customary for many parents to bring their child on his third birthday to a <em>rebbi <\/em>(male Jewish teacher of Torah studies) who introduces the child to the study of Torah.<sup>6<\/sup> The <em>rebbi <\/em>begins teaching the child the Aleph-Bet (Jewish alphabet). As he shows the boy the letters of the Aleph-Bet, he pours honey over the sacred letters, allowing the young soul to taste the sweetness of our Holy Torah! In the coming sections we will use both terms interchangeably for the comfort of all readers.<br><sup>2 <\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Shaarei_Teshuvah_Orach_Chayyim_531:7&amp;s1=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sha\u2019arei Teshuvah Orach Chaim 531:7<\/a><br><sup>3<\/sup> Shu\u201dt Arugat Habosem 210 and Shu\u201dt Maharam Brisk 2:98<br><sup>4<\/sup> The <em>kippah<\/em> is a head covering worn by Jewish males. Covering one\u2019s head signifies humility and the recognition of God\u2019s supreme dominion over him.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><sup>5<\/sup> A <em>talit katan <\/em>is a four-cornered garment with four woolen strings on each corner. This garment is generally worn between one\u2019s shirt and undershirt. In Chassidic circles, this garment is often worn above their shirt. A four cornered garment is biblically obligated to have <em>tzitzit <\/em>on its four corners (when worn by a Jewish male). However, it is customary to wear a <em>talit katan<\/em> in order to constantly perform this mitzvah. (See Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 4:4 that one may not deviate from this custom.) Wearing Tzitzit on our garments serves as a reminder of the Mitzvot of God!
