{"id":14651,"date":"2025-12-16T16:41:43","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T16:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=14651"},"modified":"2025-12-31T15:57:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T15:57:41","slug":"upsherin-part-8-various-upsherin-customs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/upsherin-part-8-various-upsherin-customs\/","title":{"rendered":"Upsherin Part 8: Various Upsherin Customs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many have the custom to begin the Upsherin haircut from the front of the head in the center, the place where his <em>Tefillin <\/em>(phylacteries) will be placed when he grows up. Others begin near the sideburn area in order to begin with the attentiveness the mitzvah of pe\u2019ot by not cutting the sidelocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is customary to contribute money to <em>Tzedaka <\/em>(charity) on the day of the Upsherin.<sup>1<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some have the practice of weighing the cut hair and giving its equivalence to Tzedaka.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many invite guests to cut a snippet of hair. They begin by honoring the grandparents and other elders assembled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yemenite Jews have the custom to have a groom whose wedding is that night to cut some of the hair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some give the first haircut at the gravesite of a <em>tzaddik <\/em>(righteous person).<sup>2<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many have the practice of doing the Upsherin haircut in Meron at the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai on Lag BaOmer.<sup>3<\/sup> Some give the haircut there even during the rest of the year.<sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), some have a practice of giving the first haircut at the gravesite of Shimon Hatzaddik.<sup>5<\/sup> Some give the haircut at the burial site of Shmuel Hanavi.<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many Jews of German decent do not have the tradition of postponing the first haircut until the age of three.
