Can\u2019t He hear us from anywhere?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rabbi Chaim Mintz responds<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hashem-is-everywhere-so-why-pray-in-special-places\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hashem Is Everywhere\u2014So Why Pray in Special Places?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-hashem-is-everywhere-at-all-times-nbsp-and-nbsp-in-nbsp-no-place-nbsp-is-nbsp-he-more-present-than-anywhere-else-nbsp-the-difference-lies-with-us-nbsp-we-do-not-experience-nbsp-the-same-level-of-nbsp-his-presence-in-all-places-nbsp-the-physical-nature-of-this-world-along-with-our-sins-nbsp-conceals-hashem-nbsp-from-us-and-makes-it-difficult-to-sense-and-connect-to-him-nbsp\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/hashem-is-here-hashem-is-there\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/hashem-is-here-hashem-is-there\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hashem is everywhere at all times<\/a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;in&nbsp;no place&nbsp;is&nbsp;He more present than anywhere else.&nbsp;The difference lies with us;&nbsp;we do not experience&nbsp;the same level of&nbsp;His presence in all places.&nbsp;The physical nature of this world, along with our sins,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/why-does-god-hide\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/why-does-god-hide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conceals Hashem&nbsp;from us<\/a> and makes it difficult to sense and connect to Him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are places where Hashem&nbsp;removes&nbsp;some&nbsp;of the barriers that normally conceal Him.&nbsp;This&nbsp;enables&nbsp;His presence to be felt more clearly,&nbsp;allowing&nbsp;us&nbsp;to&nbsp;connect&nbsp;to Him&nbsp;more deeply. While&nbsp;He hears&nbsp;us&nbsp;wherever we pray, in places where our connection to Hashem is strongest, our prayers are heightened and more likely to be accepted.&nbsp;Just as a face-to-face conversation is more personal and therefore more effective than a phone call, a prayer offered in a place where we feel closer to Hashem is more intimate and powerful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-praying-at-the-western-wall-is-so-powerful\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Praying at the Western Wall Is So Powerful<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ultimate&nbsp;manifestation&nbsp;of this concept is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/is-g-d-seeking-shelter\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/is-g-d-seeking-shelter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beit&nbsp;HaMikdash (Holy Temple)<\/a>, as the&nbsp;<em>pasuk<\/em> (verse) states,&nbsp;&#8220;\u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05d5\u05bc \u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05de\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05db\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05db\u05b8\u05dd&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;<em>Make&nbsp;for&nbsp;Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell among them<\/em>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Shemot_25:8&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Shemot_25:8&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Shemot<\/em>&nbsp;25:8<\/a>).&#8221; This does not mean that Hashem suddenly became present&nbsp;in this spot; rather, in this place, Hashem revealed His presence most fully, and&nbsp;therefore,&nbsp;our connection to Him was at its strongest.&nbsp;And this is why&nbsp;King Shlomo proclaimed&nbsp;at the inauguration of the&nbsp;Beit&nbsp;HaMikdash&nbsp;that in this place, all prayers \u2014 of Jews and non-Jews alike \u2014 are more readily accepted by Hashem (<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Shemot_25:8&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Shemot_25:8&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Melachim I<\/em>&nbsp;8:22-53<\/a>).&nbsp;Even today, although the&nbsp;Beit&nbsp;HaMikdash&nbsp;no longer stands,&nbsp;His presence can still be felt there, which is why praying at the Kotel \u2014 the closest we can get to the site of the&nbsp;Beit&nbsp;HaMikdash&nbsp;\u2014 is so powerful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-people-pray-at-a-tzaddik-s-grave\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why People Pray at a Tzaddik&#8217;s Grave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another auspicious place for prayer is at the grave of a righteous person. Hashem is especially close to a&nbsp;<em>tzaddik<\/em>&nbsp;during his lifetime, and this closeness endures at his grave even after his passing,&nbsp;enabling a deeper connection during davening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-special-times-can-strengthen-our-prayers-too\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special Times Can Strengthen Our Prayers Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as there are certain places where Hashem reveals Himself more, there are also certain&nbsp;times that are more &#8220;favorable&#8221;&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;known as&nbsp;<em>et&nbsp;ratzon<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 when&nbsp;He is more accessible to us.&nbsp;For example,&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em>navi<\/em> (prophet)&nbsp;[<a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Yeshayahu_55:6&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Yeshayahu_55:6&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Yeshayahu<\/em>&nbsp;55:6<\/a>] says, \u201cCall out to Hashem when He is near.\u201d The Sages&nbsp;(<em>Rosh Hashanah<\/em>&nbsp;18a)&nbsp;explain that this&nbsp;is a&nbsp;reference&nbsp;to the ten days&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/the-ultimate-high-holiday-experience-guide\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/the-ultimate-high-holiday-experience-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rosh Hashanah&nbsp;to&nbsp;Yom Kippur<\/a>, a period when Hashem is \u201ccloser\u201d&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;more revealed&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;making&nbsp;our prayers during this time more potent and likely to be accepted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-bringing-that-closeness-into-everyday-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing That Closeness into Everyday Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;have to wait for special days, or travel the world to find auspicious places&nbsp;to pray. You&nbsp;yourself&nbsp;can create&nbsp;this closeness&nbsp;to Hashem&nbsp;through&nbsp;performing&nbsp;mitzvot (Torah commandments), which&nbsp;draws&nbsp;us&nbsp;nearer to Him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Certain mitzvot&nbsp;create&nbsp;especially&nbsp;powerful opportunities&nbsp;to&nbsp;pray.&nbsp;For example, at a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/whats-the-significance-of-circumcision-in-judaism\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/whats-the-significance-of-circumcision-in-judaism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>brit&nbsp;milah<\/em> (ritual circumcision)<\/a>, we&nbsp;forge&nbsp;a bond with,&nbsp;and become&nbsp;servants of,&nbsp;Hashem.&nbsp;At a wedding, Hashem&nbsp;comes especially close to the bride and groom. This closeness is reflected in the&nbsp;<em>chuppah<\/em>: its white canopy recalls the Clouds of Glory in the Wilderness, where Hashem\u2019s presence was&nbsp;keenly&nbsp;felt. Just as His closeness was experienced there, He draws near to the couple under the&nbsp;<em>chuppah<\/em>,&nbsp;making it an auspicious time for them \u2014 and all those assembled \u2014 to pray.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-in-short\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Short <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Hashem is everywhere, His presence is often hidden, making it difficult to connect to Him. At specific places&nbsp;and times, He reveals Himself more, allowing us to connect more deeply,&nbsp;thereby&nbsp;strengthening our&nbsp;prayers&nbsp;and making them&nbsp;more likely to be accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter tm-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prayer becomes even more meaningful when we understand the ideas behind it.
