We can plan, prepare, and do everything in our power to protect ourselves, yet life can change in a single moment. This is especially true on the battlefield, where danger can come from anywhere and no one can know what the next moment will bring. At such a time, what can give a person the strength to move forward without being overcome by fear?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-danger-of-outside-influences\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Protection of Shema Yisrael<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Torah gives us a remarkable answer. When Jewish soldiers prepare to go to war, the Kohen tells them, &#8220;Shema Yisrael, you are approaching battle against your enemies; do not be afraid.&#8221; Why does the Torah specifically begin with the words Shema Yisrael? Rashi offers a fascinating explanation: &#8220;Even if you have no other merit, the merit of reciting Shema is enough for you to be saved.&#8221; There is something about Shema itself that brings protection and salvation. Yet what is the connection? Why should the recitation of Shema have such power, particularly at a time of danger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-was-such-a-stern-warning-necessary\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognizing Who Is Really in Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a person recites Shema, he accepts upon himself the ol Malkhut Shamayim\u2014the yoke of Hashem&#8217;s Kingship\u2014and declares that Hashem is One, that everything comes from Him, and that He alone is in control. A person who truly absorbs the message of Shema knows that nothing in life is random. Even an arrow fired on the battlefield does not reach its destination by chance. Every event is ultimately under Hashem&#8217;s direction (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moshe_Sternbuch\">Rav Moshe Sternbuch<\/a>, Ta&#8217;am VeDa&#8217;at, p. 130).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exactly what the soldier needed to hear before entering battle. He needed to recognize Hashem as King and to know that he was not facing this alone. Hashem was at his side, guiding events with love and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-no-one-is-immune\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Soldier&#8217;s Shema in the Face of Danger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can see the power of this message in a remarkable story from our own time. During Operation Protective Edge, a soldier named Chen was leading his unit in the search of a terrorist&#8217;s house in Gaza. As the soldiers searched the house, Chen remained downstairs while the rest of the unit went upstairs to clear the top floor. The soldiers upstairs were ambushed by terrorists who had been hiding there, and most of the unit was injured. Chen and the other uninjured soldiers had to evacuate the wounded while also confronting the terrorists, as gunfire came from nearby houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately ten minutes into the battle, the gunfire from the terrorists suddenly stopped. Chen understood what this could mean: they were preparing to fire a missile at the house. Certain that these were his final moments, Chen raised his right hand to cover his eyes and began reciting, &#8220;Shema Yisrael, Hashem Elokeinu, Hashem Echad.&#8221; As his eyes were covered, the missile struck. A large piece of shrapnel came flying toward him and hit his right hand, exactly<br>where he had placed it over his eyes. His hand was severely wounded, but the shrapnel did not strike his face, and his life was miraculously saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-even-great-people-recognized-the-danger\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing the Message of Shema Into Every Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each day we recite Shema in the morning and again at night, repeatedly reminding ourselves that Hashem is King and that our lives are in His hands. It is a daily opportunity to internalize that Hashem is truly guiding our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Shema to Rosh Hashanah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes especially significant as we approach the Yamim Nora&#8217;im. Although we recite Shema throughout the year and accept ol malkhut Shamayim every day, accepting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/rosh-hashanah-proclaiming-the-king\/\">Hashem&#8217;s Kingship<\/a> is the central focus of Rosh Hashanah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing in Elul to Crown Hashem as King<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This recognition does not begin on Rosh Hashanah itself. The period leading up to Rosh Hashanah is a time to prepare ourselves for this great avodah. During the month of Elul, we are given the opportunity to step back from the distractions of everyday life and strengthen our awareness of Hashem. We hear the shofar, increase our teshuvah, examine our actions, and try to come closer to Hashem. All of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/preparing-oneself-for-rosh-hashanah-ask-the-rabbi-with-rabbi-mintz\/\">prepares us for Rosh Hashanah<\/a>, when we will come before Him and proclaim Him as our King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more we prepare ourselves for this recognition, the more meaningful Rosh Hashanah becomes. We are not simply coming to ask for another year of life, health, parnasah, and success. We are first coming to recognize and appreciate the One Who gives us all of these things. We are coming to acknowledge that Hashem is the King and that every aspect of our lives is ultimately under His control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the Light of Rosh Hashanah to the Salvation of Yom Kippur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps us understand a famous teaching of Chazal. The verse in Tehillim, &#8220;LeDavid Hashem Ori VeYish&#8217;i,&#8221; is understood as a reference to the Yamim Nora&#8217;im. &#8220;Ori&#8221;\u2014&#8221;my light&#8221;\u2014refers to Rosh Hashanah, and &#8220;Yish&#8217;i&#8221;\u2014&#8221;my salvation&#8221;\u2014refers to Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is called a day of light because focusing on Hashem&#8217;s intimate involvement in our lives fills us with a clearer awareness of His presence.
