The mitzvah of Bikurim taught farmers to recognize Hashem as the Source of their blessings. Today, daily tefillah allows us to preserve that lesson by beginning anew with appreciation and expressing our gratitude personally.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Bikurim and Tefillah: Making Gratitude Personal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our Parashah describes a beautiful moment in the life of a farmer. After months of hard work, he finally sees his first fruits beginning to ripen. He has planted the seeds, tended the fields, and watched his crops grow. Now, at the moment when he could finally enjoy the fruits of his labor, he takes the first and finest fruits and brings them all the way to the Beis Hamikdash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bikurim<\/a>, the first fruits, are brought with great honor and joy, in beautiful baskets and accompanied by music and celebration. Standing before the Kohen, the farmer recounts the kindnesses of Hashem and expresses his gratitude for everything He has done for him and for Klal Yisrael. The entire experience reminds him that his success is not simply the result of his own hard work. Ultimately, his harvest is a gift from Hashem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Bikurim to Daily Tefillah <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, sadly, we no longer have the Beis Hamikdash and can no longer bring Bikurim. Is there something we can do today to capture the essence of this mitzvah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chazal (Midrash Tanchuma, Ki Savo) teach that Moshe Rabbeinu foresaw that the Beis Hamikdash would eventually be destroyed and that the mitzvah of Bikurim would cease. Moshe therefore established the three daily tefillos in their place. But why should our three daily prayers serve as a replacement for bringing the first fruits?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sfas Emes (5632) explains that the essence of Bikurim is giving the reishis\u2014the first part\u2014to Hashem. The first fruits represent taking the beginning of our blessings and returning it to their Source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a person brings his first fruits to the Beis Hamikdash, he is recognizing that everything he has ultimately comes from Hashem. He is not simply bringing a basket of fruit; he is acknowledging the Source of his success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning to Our Source Each Day <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The same idea lies at the heart of tefillah. By beginning our day with tefillah, we return to our Source and remind ourselves that everything we have and everything we will accomplish comes from Hashem. The Sfas Emes teaches that returning to our Source brings renewal. When we reconnect ourselves to Hashem, we can begin each day anew, with a fresh awareness of where our blessings come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also why we mention the Exodus from Egypt every day. It was the beginning of our journey as a nation, and remembering it reconnects us to our roots and to Hashem, Who took us out of Egypt and brought us to Eretz Yisrael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gratitude Woven Through the Siddur <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we look at the Siddur, we can see this idea come to life. Our daily tefillah<\/a> begins with recognition and appreciation, reminding us that everything we have comes from Hashem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We begin Shacharis with Birkas HaShachar, thanking Hashem for the many basic gifts He renews for us each morning. We continue with Pesukei D\u2019Zimra, praising Hashem through the beautiful words of David HaMelech. We then recite Birkos Krias Shema, expressing our appreciation for life, light, Hashem’s love, and His constant care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This appreciation continues throughout the rest of our tefillah. We proclaim Shema Yisrael, accepting Hashem’s Kingship and recognizing that He is in control. In Emes V\u2019Yatziv, we praise Hashem for the miracles of Yetzias Mitzrayim and Krias Yam Suf. The Shemoneh Esrei continues with blessings for health, livelihood, redemption, peace, and so many other gifts. We conclude with Aleinu L\u2019Shabeach, recognizing Hashem’s dominion over the entire world and acknowledging that He is the ultimate Source of everything in the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rav Chatzkel Levenstein <\/a>points out that because the Siddur is so deeply rooted in appreciation, tefillah gives us a tremendous opportunity to elevate our gratitude. We do not need to add another hour to our day. We are already davening. We simply need to put a little more kavanah\u2014thought and intention\u2014into the words we are saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can pause for a moment and think, \u201cHashem, I really mean this. Thank You for what You have given me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That small change can transform our tefillah, and over time, it can transform the way we experience our entire lives. (Ohr Yechezkel, Vol. 4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gratitude Must Be Personal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is another fascinating connection between Bikurim and gratitude. The Chizkuni explains that the owner of the Bikurim himself had to bring them to the Beis Hamikdash. We can see this idea in the very wording of the verse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd you shall take from the first of every fruit of the ground that you bring from your land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Devarim 26:2<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Torah specifically describes the fruits as those that \u201cyou bring,\u201d highlighting the personal involvement of the person who received the blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This teaches us something fundamental about gratitude. Genuine appreciation is not merely about giving something or saying \u201cthank you.\u201d It is about personally recognizing where our blessings came from and taking the time to express that recognition ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer could not simply send his fruits with someone else. He had to make the journey himself, stand before the Kohen, and personally acknowledge all that Hashem had done for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see this idea reflected in a fascinating halachic detail concerning Modim D\u2019Rabanan<\/a>, the expression of gratitude that we say during the repetition of the Shemoneh Esrei. It is unique: it is the one blessing in which the shaliach tzibbur and the congregation express their thanks together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shaliach tzibbur can represent us in public prayer, but when it comes to expressing our personal gratitude to Hashem, he cannot say it on our behalf. Each person must express his own thanks. Gratitude must come personally from the person who received the kindness. (Abudraham on the Siddur, Modim)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gives us another way to understand the connection between Bikurim and tefillah. Just as the farmer had to bring his first fruits himself, our gratitude to Hashem must also come from us personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of tefillah is our personal connection to Hashem and our recognition of all that He does for us. We need to stand before Hashem ourselves, open our hearts, and express our own thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Personal Thank You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the final years of Rav Elyashiv’s life, he required a serious operation, and a top surgeon was flown in from America to perform it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the surgery, Rav Elyashiv asked those around him how to say \u201cthank you\u201d in English. They were surprised and offered to thank the doctor for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rav Elyashiv insisted, \u201cNo. I need to thank him personally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He practiced saying \u201cthank you\u201d in English until he could say it himself. Then he personally thanked the surgeon in his own language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something very powerful about that story. A person can recognize that someone has done something wonderful for him, and he can even ask someone else to convey his appreciation. But there is a special value in expressing gratitude personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the message of Bikurim. We are being taught to stop and recognize the Source of our blessings. We are being taught not to take our success for granted, but to turn back toward Hashem and say, in our own words and from our own hearts: Thank You.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may no longer be able to bring Bikurim to the Beis Hamikdash, but every morning we have the opportunity to capture their essence. We can begin our day by returning to our Source, recognizing the blessings we have received, and approaching tefillah not simply as a daily obligation, but as our personal opportunity to say thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
