It expresses our joy at the opportunity for forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and renewed closeness to God.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-danger-of-outside-influences\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Yom Kippur Feast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Talmud says <a href=\"https:\/\/library.alhatorah.org\/?r1=Bavli_Berakhot_8b&amp;s1=1&amp;l1=he,en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Brachos 8b<\/a>), &#8220;Anyone who eats and drinks on the day proceeding Yom Kippur, it is considered as if he fasted on that day in addition to Yom Kippur.&#8221; This is a fascinating statement. We would all say that it would make sense to eat on the day prior to a fast. However, we would think to do so merely as a practical measure. Why does the Torah attribute such significance to this seemingly mundane activity? What is even more surprising is that engaging in eating seems to be going against the spirit of Yom Kippur which is the strictest fast day in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur is a most serious day on which we engage in prayer for the greater part of the day and abstain from food and drink along with other physical comforts (such as bathing and wearing leather footwear). How do we understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/why-do-we-eat-a-festive-meal-before-yom-kippur\/\">great emphasis on eating, the day prior<\/a>, which seems to stand in stark contrast to the theme of Yom Kippur?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Eat a Festive Meal Before Yom Kippur?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sha&#8217;ari Teshuvah (4:8) enlightens us with a profound insight into the meals we eat on this day. In addition to fueling our energy reserves with food, we are celebrating the joyous occasion of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/the-key-to-forgiveness\/\">sins being forgiven on Yom Kippur<\/a> with festive meals! (Since we fast on Yom Kippur itself, we celebrate our good fortune the day prior out of excitement in anticipation of this special day.) By expressing our happiness over our sins being forgiven, we demonstrate how painful it is for us to have had sinned, and this proves our true remorse over having accumulated them in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teshuvah Creates a New Beginning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rabbi Boruch Ber Leibowitz was meticulous about performing the Mitzvah (commandment) of honoring one&#8217;s parents. Nevertheless, when his father passed away, Rabbi Leibowitz was beside himself. He felt he could have done even more to care for his father, and these nagging thoughts gave him no rest. His low spirits were evident on his face, and everyone tried to console him. Despite their well-meaning efforts, they could not succeed. At some point, he attended a convention in which the Chofetz Chaim was present. The Chofetz Chaim noticed the depressed state of Rabbi Leibowitz and inquired as to what the cause was. Rabbi Boruch Ber shared with him his disturbing feelings, and the Chofetz Chaim responded with his great wisdom, &#8220;Don&#8217;t dwell on the past, you can do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/yom-kippur\/\">Teshuvah (repentance)<\/a> and thereby amend any shortcomings you had!&#8221; These words ignited a spark in Rabbi Leibowitz which no one else succeeded to do. In an instant, he became a new man. Upon hearing these words Reb Boruch Ber immediately returned to his old cheerful self and radiated with happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Joy of Spiritual Renewal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Yom Kippur connotes a solemn atmosphere, at the same time, it is a day of great joy. In fact, our sages tell us (Tractate Ta&#8217;anis 26b) that Yom Kippur is of the happiest days for the Jews. There is no greater joy than being purified of our sins and elevating our souls to new heights by ridding our souls from contamination. With proper Teshvah, we are promised that we can all attain atonement on this special day. However, the first step is to show God that we truly care about our spiritual cleanliness. Everyone would agree that it&#8217;s a nice idea to be free of sin, but does it really mean that much to us? Do we find the presence of sins contaminating our souls to be truly bothersome? Being soiled with sins is a true tragedy which we often fail to realize. By giving our attention to the severity of the matter, we can slowly tap into the enormous joy Yom Kippur contains.
