Join TorahMates today!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"tm-cta wp-block-heading\">Black Dot On the Horizon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Month of Av, sun paints field with golden tints,\nGlaring at horizon, the farmer\u2019s eye squints.\n\nWhere the blond field meets blue sky, a black dot,\nAppears from the mist, approaching the crop.\n\nThe neigh of a horse shifts the farmer's gaze,\nTill he turns back and grants the dot a wave.\n\nWhich is by this time a black dot no more,\nBlack dot had turned into what he\u2019d hoped for.\n\nA black hat, black coat, and black shoes approaching,\nCloser he came, the more he was grinning.\n\nA year has passed since <em>mashgiach <\/em>was here,\nTo check the wheat crops, quite close he will peer.\n\n\"Please hurry! We must start!!\" the farmer shouts, \nGrinds wheat in his palm, as mashgiach scouts.\n\n\u201cYou\u2019re right, no time to waste,\u201d <em>mashgiach<\/em> frets, \nMost wheat is still dry, but now some is wet.\n\nDew settles on wheat, bakes under the sun,\nCan leaven the wheat, a reason to shun.\n\nSent to the farm by the matzah factory,\nTo choose the wheat for their inventory.\n\n\"Field one is chametz! Field two is ok!\" \nCries <em>mashgiach<\/em>, before going away.\n\nThis wheat's journey not meant for a bagel, \nRather for matzah on Passover table.\n\nFrom farm to the flour mill, traveled the wheat,\nThe mashgiach chooses, the farmer reaps.\n\nOnto a truck, the very special flour,\nDriven to Brooklyn, during rush hour.\n\nHeading to be made not into challah,\nRather next Passover\u2019s shmura matzah\n\nFactory waits for flour truck to arrive,\nLike groom at <em>chupah<\/em>, waiting for his bride.\n\nNo machine nor tech in baking is used,\nFlour and water by hand they are fused.\n\nIn order to make their unleavened bread, \nTogether with water, flour is wed.\n\nMarry the flour with water by hand, \nMust make matzah in eighteen-minute span.\n\nNothing is added, no yeast and no salt,\nThe dough cannot rise, all leavening must halt.\n\nCalled matza \u201cshmura,\u201d by hand it is made, \nRolled flat and pressed round, unlike challah\u2019s braid.\n\nBy hand form the dough, by hand you must knead,\nInto the oven, a thousand degrees.\n\nOut of the oven, the edges are burned,\nBlack spots on the edge? It\u2019s of no concern.\n\nWhy did G-d decree this prohibition?\nWhy is it called this \u201cbread of affliction?\u201d\n\nThe answer found in the holy Torah,\nWe find it in Bo, name of the <em>parsha<\/em>.\n\nThe Jews in Egypt were living as slaves,\nMoshe led the Jews to freedom unscathed.\n\nWhile Pharaoh pondered God\u2019s name in heaven, \nJews took their dough before it could leaven.\n\nThe Jews' exodus indeed did occur,\nSo we eat matzah at the Passover <em>seder<\/em>.\n\nMatzah arrives at Passover table,\nRecite the story of the Jewish faithful.\n\nTake three whole matzot, called matzah \u201cshlemim,\u201d\nNo matzah is broken, none are \u201cshvurim.\u201d\n\nMiddle matzah is raised for all to see,\nFirst blessing recited, called \u201cHamotzi.\u201d\n\nClose your eyelids and listen for the crack,\nRecall wheat\u2019s journey, began with a black\n\nDot on horizon, a walk through wheat fields,\nTo carefully choose the crop that would yield.\n\nMatzah for Passover, ready to munch,\nBite with your teeth, and listen for crunch.<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"tm-cta\"><em>By Ronen Khordipour<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Q: What type of wheat can be used for flour to make Matzah that is kosher for Passover?
