{"id":6292,"date":"2023-05-03T13:49:55","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T13:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=6292"},"modified":"2023-08-17T15:51:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T15:51:58","slug":"all-we-take-with-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/all-we-take-with-us\/","title":{"rendered":"All We Take With Us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All We Take With Us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Here comes a tale of what happened to us,\nWhen we left Eretz Yisroel.\nWe sent back a lift with all of our stuff.\nBig deal. <strong>That's<\/strong> a story to tell?\n\nWell, the part that is worth telling\nIs we'd lived there for over ten years,\nBecoming observant, redirecting our lives,\nWe returned here with many fears.\n\nHow could we manage to keep our values straight?\nWould Torah and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jewish learning<\/a> start slipping behind?\nAnd then our lift came. We opened it up.\nWhat we were looking for\u2014we did find.\n\nNearly all our possessions, all of our things,\nHad been stolen from us. <strong>All our stuff.<\/strong>\nThe uninsured crates had been broken into.\n\"Leaving Home wasn't <strong>enough<\/strong>!?!\"\n\nWe realized later, we'd needed this <a href=\"https:\/\/jel.jewish-languages.org\/words\/429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>patsh<\/strong><\/a>,\nGiven with complete love, though we'd cried,\nThe message it brought didn't hit right away.\nOnly after the pain could subside.\n\nYou see there was just <strong>one box<\/strong> left untouched,\n<strong>One crate<\/strong> in which no thieves had pried.\nCan you guess what was in that one heavy box?\nAll our Torah books were packed inside.\n\nThat one box was all that remained.\nThe symbolism was not lost.\nThis experience left an indelible mark,\nAt <strong>comparatively<\/strong> little cost.\n\nThat's really <strong>all<\/strong> we can take with us.\nIn the other boxes we'll find ... nil.\nJust the Torah box goes from one world to the next.\nSo which need we work hardest to fill?\n\nHow could we ever manage to keep our values straight?\nWhat would save us from slipping back yet?\nThe invaluable lift we were hoping for came.\nWhat we need is precisely what we get.\n\n<em>Bracha Goetz is the author of 41 Jewish children\u2019s books and a candid memoir for adults about her journey in Judaism.
