{"id":6359,"date":"2023-05-11T19:32:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T19:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=6359"},"modified":"2025-05-27T14:42:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T14:42:50","slug":"jewish-belief-in-gods-control-shemittah-parshat-behar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/jewish-belief-in-gods-control-shemittah-parshat-behar\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Behar: Jewish Belief in God&#8217;s Control"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Concept of Shemittah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Behar<\/em>\u201d means on the mountain.&nbsp; On the mountain of Sinai, Hashem (God) communicates to Moses the laws of the \u201c<em>Shemittah<\/em>\u201d or Sabbatical year: every seventh year, in Israel, all work on the land should cease. A farmer must therefore have faith in Hashem that the sixth year\u2019s harvest will also provide for the seventh year.&nbsp; This exemplifies a fundamental Jewish belief that Hashem, not we, is in control of what transpires in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cycle in Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">The farmer walks through his meadow alone,\nAs dry as a bone, he groans and bemoans.\n\nWaited all winter, and now it is March.\nNo drops from the sky, leaving his field parched.\n\nLast winter lacked rains, withered his pastures.\nSo dry was the earth, you could see fractures.\n\nLike Shabbat cholent that you had forgot,\nOn Motzei Shabbat, to turn off crockpot.\n\nThe farmer\u2019s wife now begins to worry;\nTurns towards her husband, and utters firmly:\n\n\u201cNext year is <em>Shemittah<\/em>, it is year seven.  \nCan't sow our fields without rain from heaven.\n\nThis year we must reap enough for next year.\nBut look at our fields, a drought I do fear.\"\n\n\"Join me dear wife, to pray for the rain.\nDevotion to G-d so that we may gain.\n\nHis favor we seek, our blessings will reach.\nAcknowledge the <em>teshuvah <\/em>that I preach.\n\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/jewish_prayer_for_wind_and_rain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Morid hageshem<\/a><\/em>, for rain we shall pray\nThree times a day we read <em>Shemoneh Esrei<\/em>.\n\nSteer clear of your fear, year six not over.\nTogether we pray, we are beholder's-\n\nOf G-d who provides, in G-d we have faith.\nThis year we shall yield enough for the eighth-\n\nYear after <em>shemittah<\/em>, our fields will produce\nEnough for three years, and G-d will unloose\n\nFar from a trickle, we pray for deluge,\nDroplets from above, a torrent so huge.\u201d\n\nMarry the water with seeds we bestrew,\nLike <em>Chatan <\/em>and <em>Kallah<\/em>, then will ensue,\n\nEmerge from the soil, green sprouts coming soon,\nLike a butterfly, pop out of cocoon.\n\nBy end of year six, G-d made rejoinder\nTo our entreaties, we became hoarders\n\nOf copious wheat, enough for three years.\nWe bless you Hashem, this year we shall cheer.\n\nBut my dear wife, one thing you should know,\nThe <em>shemittah <\/em>year is very apropos\n\nTo the day we rest on Shabbat each week,\nFor six days we work, then repose we seek.\n\n<em>Shemittah <\/em>like Shabbat, seven the cycle.\nWork six rest seventh, we learn in Bible.\n\n\n<em>Ronen Khordipour makes Torah wisdom accessible to a wide Jewish audience through simple rhyming poetry.
