A Simchas Torah tradition, courtesy of Mrs. Varda Epstein.

Ingredients:

1 large can cranberry sauce

1 16 oz. can tomato sauce

1 cup water

juice of half a lemon

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup raisins

2 pounds ground meat

1 egg

3 saltines, crushed, soaked and squeezed dry

salt and pepper to taste

1 grated medium onion

1/4 cup warm water mixed with 1 Tbsp. ketchup

Combine first five ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil. Add 1/2 cup raisins and let simmer five minutes more.

Separate cabbage leaves according to your favorite method (such as freezing and removing the leaves once thawed.) Combine remaining ingredients and fill cabbage leaves, placing them seam-side down in a pot. Cover with sauce and simmer, covered, on top of the stove for an hour.

Bake in a 350F oven, uncovered, basting occasionally, for one hour or until brown.
